I have had all three of my children at Sureno, KTA from 2009-2019 and have seen many changes, improvements, growth from different teachers and principals to the addition of 7th & 8th grade. Overall, if you are an active contributor I think your family will do well. We left the area and came back within a few months because they knew my family and knew their needs and I will always appreciate the schools openness to hear a parent's perspective. There is daily homework. The school starts earlier that many K-8's at 7:25 am. The veteran teachers are really stellar and engaged with all ages, it's pretty phenomenal their ability to adapt to all the changes. The front office staff and nurse are some of the most caring crew you will ever meet. If you get a chance to tour, talk to them about the school, they will be honest and candid about what to expect if attending KTA. The addition of 7th and 8th grade is new so I think a few years of growing pains will put the teachers and staff in a better position to handle "big kid" issues like bullying, hormonal changes like depression and anxiety, and pressure to get good grades for high school and college. I do not think KTA is quite there yet, though. Personally, I think severe bullying and multiple offenses should result in expulsion as it taints the entire school experience for so many. When kids feel bullying won't be dealt with, they begin to lose respect for the adults. I don't think they are prepared to lose children with the small classes of 7th & 8th so that may be why bullying is so much more acceptable now. Anyhow, what you really want to know... overall, the school and staff is well intentioned, dedicated, the school and neighborhood is safe, and the principal is approachable and communicative. If you have the ability to be super involved and volunteer to keep eyes on your kids, you will do well at this school. They also have in-house after school care. I recommend the Kidsclub program (K-5th) because the kids have the entire cafeteria and many options to play, have snacks, socialize and just be kids. I do not recommend the After Hours program for 7th & 8th. The older kids stay in a small room with a staff member that is inexperienced with the nuisances of teens. It is set up like detention with forced activities. This may also be a growing pain and as of this writing may have gotten better.

My son is in 6th grade. He needed to fulfill his PE requirement of running a mile. My son's running abilities are not that strong. He was having difficulty finishing. Mr Shepherd showed patience as my son finished his run. Even better though other students in the class asked to run with my son after they had finished their run. This helped my son finish his mile. At the end of the day I asked my son about the best part of his day and he replied PE, I asked him why and he told me how everyone ran with him to help him finish his run. He could not wait for PE the next day. Thank you Mr. Shepherd for creating an environment where my son wants to return to everyday and having students work as a team even in an individual activity as a mile run requirement.

This is our daughter's 4th year at KTA and we couldn't be happier. The teachers and administrators are very experienced. Our daughter is an advanced learner and she is being constantly challenged. We like the overall environment of the school and recommend it to all our friends.

Kids get bullied at this school and when they tell the teacher the teacher suggests that your kid needs to be on medication keep your kids far away from this school
