Let’s start off by pointing out how rude the front office staff is. They will not greet you when you arrive and they are so angry all the time, the phones are rarely answered yet when you walk in the door they are all sitting at their desks. There is also a lot of favoritism and discrimination . Unless you’re wealthy, white, contributing to the school or involved in PTO be sure you will be overlooked and belittled. Parents and kids are snobby and stuck up and since most of them are privileged they get away with just about anything, if you bring it to the principals attention it simply gets swept under the rug. There are a few good teachers whom I cannot complain about, very kind, patient and supportive. The first year my son transitioned here from another school his experience was terrible, his teacher was rude to all the kids, little to no communication with the parents and did not provide any type of extra help if my son was struggling in an area since then his grades have dropped. Since they offer the Spanish immersion program it can be tough for new students to catch on to the fast paced classes whereas you would normally spend 1 hour on a lecture here it is cut short to 30 mins since they have to switch classes. Meaning they have less time to go over and better understand what they have been taught. As far as the amount of homework given it isn’t too bad it’s pretty average. Overall I wouldn’t recommend this school it’s truly not for everyone, my kids happiness is priority and they were not happy at Heights and I experienced first hand how you need to be “someone” to be treated fairly.

Heights has been a very welcoming school. Our daughter has been challenged in a supportive environment and has had the opportunity to experience school with excellent teachers.

We have grown to love our heights family. The more involved you are in a school the more you can get out of it.

We chose Heights nearly a decade ago based on size, location, diversity, and the leadership. It was a Blue Ribbon school. Sadly, we've seen it decline over the years, and we've watched many good teachers and families jump ship. Some of what is wrong is happening, rapidly, at all urban public schools and is a result of abysmal state and national education policies and funding. But some of it is just the leadership/poor communication at this school. Over the years, we've said goodbye to all of what makes school fun/memorable for small children - library book battle, 4th grade talent show, 2nd grade farmers market, birthday/holiday celebrations, etc. Teachers explain - too much work, too little time. But now they've trimmed to the bone by cutting AM snack for the youngest children and reducing recess to almost nothing (in fact, it IS nothing on hot days). The transitions are too many and too rapid - adults are often heard barking orders, now via microphones. Children that need to use the bathroom must first assess "Is it an emergency?" The stress level is just too high. Has felt more like a jail than a school during our recent visits. Look elsewhere. The Spanish immersion is a great concept, but it's not worth it when poor scheduling leaves no time to eat or play or pee.
