The west side of Coral Gables Matheson Hammock Park will get a new 10-foot-wide nature trail and pedestrian access courtesy of a land sale, per Miami Today.

The Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida Inc. is selling the half-acre lot at 9950 Old Cutler Road to Miami-Dade County. The proposed contract is $415,000 for the lot, which was appraised at $440,000 in February 2016. The new trail will allow the park to increase its nature-based programming.

County commissioners must modify the 2004 Building Better Communities General Obligation Bond project that set aside $6 million that the county would borrow for Matheson Hammock Park improvements. The project’s description in the bond issue did not provide for land acquisition, so the modification is necessary for the land purchase. The citizens advisory committee that oversees the 2004 bond issue recommended the purchase of the land April 27.

The park, located at 9610 Old Cutler Road, currently has 462 acres and offers a variety of activities and amenities, such as a boating school, atoll pools, beaches, and a fishing pier.
