Many potential homebuyers share the dream of living in the Bay Area. This well-known region is popular for its tech job scene, diversity, and all-around comfortable lifestyle. Unfortunately, real estate prices have skyrocketed so much that for many of these interested buyers, the American Dream is well out of reach. In fact, according to SF Gate, home prices are so high that the real estate market in the San Francisco Bay Area is freezing out one in five potential homebuyers.

Around the region, the median price of a home is $900,000. According to Business Insider, that whopping number is nearly four times the national average. But that number only reflects prices across the region as a whole. In many cities, prices are far higher than the regional median. Business Insider reports a median-priced home in San Francisco will set the buyer back $1.61 million. A buyer would need an income of at least $333,270 in order to reasonably afford that price tag.

San Jose, while comparatively cheaper than San Francisco, still carries a median price tag of $1.26 million. According to CBS SF Bay Area, the median home price in San Jose increased by an average of $1,728 every day during the first quarter of 2018.

If you’re getting frozen out by impossibly high real estate prices in the Bay Area, here are some neighborhoods to check out, where you may find cheaper homes.

Aerial of homes in the Bay area

Waterford, Walnut Creek

According to Neighborhoods.com data, Waterford has a median home price of $345,000–that’s way less than the median home price in San Francisco. Plus, Walnut Creek is one of the most family-friendly cities in the region, thanks to its numerous public parks, scenic hiking destinations, and warm climate.

Quail Hollow, Novato

It’s not easy to buy a home for half a million dollars in the Bay Area these days, but home prices in the Quail Hollow neighborhood of Marin County’s Novato are still relatively affordable, with a median price of $575,000.

Mission Foothill, Hayward

If you’re commuting into Silicon Valley for work, one city to consider is Hayward. In the center of the East Bay, Hayward is directly across the bay from tech hub Palo Alto. There are dozens of homes for sale in this city with a price tag far below $1 million. In Mission Foothill, for example, the median home price is just $620,000.

Vineyard Estates, Pleasanton

Life is likely to be more pleasant—pun intended—if you can avoid spending an arm and a leg on a home. In the East Bay city of Pleasanton, there are multimillion-dollar homes galore—as well as pockets of comparative affordability. The neighborhood of Vineyard Estates, for example, has a median home price in the mid $100s with homes offering one to three bedrooms, one to two bathrooms, and about 1,500 square feet of living space.
