The Chicago Lakefront Trail has been getting an update courtesy of a $12 million gift from investor and Illinois resident Ken Griffin, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The donation is funding the creation of separate bike and pedestrian lanes along the lakefront trail.

Part of the project is now complete. Mayor Rahm Emanuel reopened the portion of the trail between North and Fullerton avenues, according to the report. This stretch of the lakefront trail now has separate lanes for bicyclists and pedestrians. This area of the path is a very busy section.

The entire project is expected to be completed in 2018.

The separate lanes are designed to reduce accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians, according to the report.
