In an effort to make Los Angeles a safer place for cyclists and pedestrians, the city has already added a bunch of pedestrian and bicycle-friendly changes in neighborhoods including Culver City, Venice, Hollywood, and Pasadena. Now, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works plans on implementing similar improvements throughout the unchartered city of East LA, starting this month at 6th and Hubbard.

Per Eastsider LA, the $1.5 billion street enhancements coming to 6th and Hubbard streets is part of the “Safer Routes to School” program, which finances safety improvements near schools. However, East LA will also see changes on major streets including Arizona Avenue, Ford Boulevard, Rowan Avenue, and Woods Avenue. The federal program and Metro-funded project will bring more protected bike lanes, shared bicycle paths, curb extensions, traffic circles, and traffic signals to the area, along with road diets. More details can be found below.

New Bike Lanes, Routes, and Boulevards:

  • 1st Street
  • Ford Boulevard between 3rd Street and Olympic Boulevard (1 mile)
  • Rowan Avenue between Floral Drive and Whittier Boulevard (1.35 miles)
  • Woods Avenue between 1st Street and Olympic Boulevard (1.48 miles)
  • Mednik/Arizona Avenue between Floral Drive and Telegraph Road (2.1 miles)
