Iconic architect Frank Welch recently died at 90, and a personal piece of his legacy in Texas modernist design is up for sale for $1.179 million according to Candy’s Dirt.

Built in 1997 near the Katy Trail and Highland Park, Welch’s nearly 3,000-square-foot Northern Hills townhome includes an open living and dining area, gourmet kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, an elevator, and swimming pool.

Welch was known as the Dean of Texas Architecture for the role he played in elevating Texas modernist design, which mixes native landscaping and building materials with clean lines, glass, skylights, and an abundance of natural light.

“No one understood Texas and Texas light like Frank did,” Welch’s protege, Bentley Tibbs, told Candy’s Dirt. “Light was such a central piece of his architecture.”

From red oaks, Ginkgo trees, St. Joe brick, and oak cabinetry to pure contemporary artistry, Welch’s home mirrors his life’s work, which earned him the prestigious 2017 Texas Medal of the Arts award shortly before his death.

"Frank was an unpretentious, articulate, interesting man, and he was profoundly influential," Tricia Weiner, the listing agent with Dallas-based Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate, said in a statement. "Your houses are like people. From the exterior, you have no idea what is inside until you get to know them, then that inner beauty really shows up."
