The Downtown Devil is reporting that the Phoenix City Council’s Sustainability, Housing, Efficiency, and Neighborhoods Subcommittee has approved funding for the Alwun House Foundation’s Green Art Park.

That vote sends the measure to City Council which, if approved, will provide $100,000 toward the park with federal funds for the revitalization of neighborhoods in Phoenix from the Community Development Block Grant. The foundation has already stated it will provide $200,000 toward the costs as well.

Located in the historic Garfield neighborhood near Roosevelt and 12th streets, the Alwun House and its foundation strive to enhance the community through art. Their idea for a park was to provide community space, landscaping, and parking to the two adjacent vacant lots currently on the site. The gardens would serve a place for community events like movie nights and yard sales with room for food trucks in the parking lot.

Roberto Fritz, a Phoenix city employee who oversees revitalization efforts in the Garfield neighborhood, hopes the park will continue to bring the community together and praises the foundation’s commitment to art. Of future possibilities for the park, Fritz envisions it a place for a farmers market or bazaar for residents to sell local goods and crafts.
