The San Luis Obispo City Council has approved the 720-home Avila Ranch project, according to a report by The Tribune. Though the development was not without some local opposition in the years leading up to September’s approval, the plans received a unanimous vote.

Along with the proposed homes in the community, Avila Ranch will also feature a large park, dedicated commercial space, and additional open space for residents within its 150 acres.

Of the 720 homes, many will cost less than $650,000 to buy. In part, Avila Ranch is geared toward being more affordable for residents that already live and/or work in the area. The project would start building its initial project phase of 179 homes in about two years, with the first homes available in 2020.

Farmland and undeveloped country roads currently occupy the land Avila Ranch will sit on. Approval to build was in part due to the city’s current housing crisis, which mimics that of the rest of California. Avila Ranch isn’t the only development trying to address this issue, either. Another project, San Luis Ranch, will bring 580 homes of its own. With more than 30,000 workers commuting into the city daily, these homes within San Luis Obispo could potentially help reduce traffic in the area.
