We’ve been reporting on the current mini-home trend, including the most recent plans for a shipping container housing development in Tucson. Now, the idea of maximizing space with shipping container construction is reaching the world of Arizona retail as Phoenix is about to get its first shipping container micro-marketplace, according to AZ Big Media.

Located at 901 N. First St., in the heart of Evans Churchill neighborhood, the development dubbed “The Churchill,” will provide 14,000 square feet of retail space consisting of 19 repurposed shipping containers, designed by Archicon and Local Studios.

The focal point will be a large courtyard, but the “vibe” of the development will correspond with that of the surrounding community with modern appeal and preservation of community values. Along with retail, the space will provide a place for weekly activities like wellness classes, arts programming, and educational opportunities.

Planning on supporting neighboring businesses and residents, the center will also host monthly fundraisers for local nonprofits throughout the valley. Hartley Rodie, the project co-partner, said, “It’s not all about dollars and cents. This project is about people and community.”

Though the space will provide room for 10 tenants, only three have been solidified. The Freak Brothers will acquire their first brick and mortar location for their widely popular pizza truck. The other tenants include Pobrecito, a new cocktail concept from Barter & Shake, and Mexican gift retailer Costs. The remaining tenants will be revealed on social media in the coming weeks.

The project is currently under construction — the grand opening is expected to take place in spring 2018.
