All around the country, people are dreading Thanksgiving weekend travel. It’s notoriously the worst time of year to fly or drive anywhere. And even for those used to traffic, like Los Angeles residents, getting to your destination becomes an unbearable exercise.

Google is here to help this year. Using data from Google Maps and Google News Lab, they’ve mapped out Thanksgiving for all the major U.S. cities. The tips and tricks include shopping, food, and entertainment preferences, as well as the all-important traffic patterns you’ll need to know.

For Los Angeles: We hope you’re ready to wake up pretty early.

According to Google, the best time to travel the day before Thanksgiving (Wednesday) is 4 a.m. The worst time is 4 p.m. when work’s already let out for everyone and the roads are glorified parking lots.

On the way back home, it’s best to say goodbye to family and friends when going to bed on Thanksgiving, because Google recommends you get back on the road at 4 a.m. Friday morning. Saturday at 2 p.m. is your worst time for a return trip, FYI.

Breaking down traffic patterns each day of the long holiday weekend, there’s a major spike from noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving itself. Black Friday shows high traffic numbers until about 9 p.m. while Saturday features a similarly large block of busy roads. If you choose to leave on Sunday get out early (before 8 a.m.) or late (after 8 p.m.).

Of course, much of it’s also dependent on where you’re going to/from — but at least now you’re prepared for what awaits you while driving around Thanksgiving in (and near) Los Angeles.
