Developers Brian and Jay Friedman have started plans for the conversion of Patio del Moro, the historic apartment complex in West Hollywood that supposedly housed the likes of Charlie Chaplin and wife Paulette Goddard. According to George Smith Partners, the firm financing the project, the developers hope to transform the seven-unit rental building into condominiums.

Patio del Moro was built in 1925 by the husband and wife architecture duo Arthur and Nina Zwebell. The courtyard-style apartment was listed in the National Register of Historic Places back in 1986. The Spanish-style property has several noted features including its distinctive rounded entrance, lush vegetation, and multicolored tiled stairs and fountains. Each unit includes tile and hardwood floors, exposed beam ceilings, brick fireplaces, and even hidden corridors.

Although renovation plans haven’t been released yet, the building probably won’t undergo drastic changes due to strict regulations from the Mills Act. Since the developers plan on applying for these tax benefits, they need to uphold the apartment building’s original structure.

Once renovations are complete, current tenants have the choice to purchase their homes.
