The Leader in Me process is amazing. It truly teaches our kids how to take responsibility for their own learning and gives many opportunities for them to learn leadership skills. The principal and the staff care for kids and our kids know it. There is just a positive feeling when you walk on campus. The single complaints here about teachers and the principal are from disgruntled parents, obviously. Over-all, the school is amazing.
First a background on our situation. My son was diagnosed with autism when he was two years old. We have done years of speech , ot , ABA therapies. At my son's previous school at a different district he was well taken care of and they respected and accommodated his IEP and his developmental physicians report and suggestions . Fast forward two years later we are now new to Mckinley we have been at this school for five months and already had multiple IEPs since the beginning with this school. They have been unable to accommodate him at all and meet his needs. My son is high functioning and requires extra support and prompting unfortunately this school has chosen to treat my son's disability as a behavior issue and are not meeting his needs whatsoever. He is getting minimal help. I do agree with another person's review about the principal Dr.Diedrich he does favor the teachers over the parents and students. We had a horrible teacher and made complaints and he had her back and defended her bad behaviors , he did not take us seriously until we went to the school district to complain. Also he did mention something along the lines that he believes that a lot of students with behavior issues are incorrectly diagnosed with autism ( completely offended by this) meanwhile my autistic son is being treated as a student with bad behavior instead of an autistic student who is having difficulty because they have not respected his disability or IEP. This is a horrible school for special needs, they have been wasting not only our time but interfering with my son's education by not giving him the help he is needing. This school has broke our trust and left such a bad taste in our mouth that we decided to not waste anymore time with them and are enrolling our son in homeschool. Note to parents: if you are having issues with this school and they are not addressing your complaints email the district.
I really like this school, my son is in the 3Rd grade and we've had a great experience. The teachers are really thoughtful with the children and parents. Teachers have a tough job with so many kids, I feel as long as parents do there part your children will be successful here.
I really like the school a lot. My son has the best teacher ever! I also like both principals. Rhey are good to my son! I encounter most of the teachers and they are very sweet. I like the school a lot!
