I logged on to review La Ballona because around this time two years ago we were anxiously touring the Culver City schools trying to decide which one was right for our child. I want to share our experience as we found it hard to find info on the school. We are zoned for a different CC school but chose La Ballona for the immersion program. I think the most important thing I can say is that our son has absolutely thrived here. He LOVES coming to school, and complains on the weekend that he can't. He comes home filled with enthusiasm about what he is learning, which is infectious - he wants to read more about what he has learned that day. For instance he was telling us all about how California was once part of Mexico, and wanted to get out our Atlas and look at a map. It certainly seems like he's getting a rounded education - not just learning to pass tests. Personally I also love that he is meeting children from all walks of life, not just ethnically different to him, but from different socio-economic backgrounds. I have been very impressed by how much the parents get involved in the school as well. The great thing about the immersion stream is that parents have to actively choose it for their child and opt in, so everyone seems really motivated to get involved and help the kids do well. He's only had two teachers so far, but both have been great, and we have also found that other staff at the school are really motivated and friendly. Oh and the after-school Star Nova classes are great too. We would really recommend this school.

My son is a kindergartener in the dual immersion program. He is a native English speaker but after just a few months can already have basic conversations in Spanish, and seems really inspired with a love of learning. He's made lots of friends and is happy. There is reading in Spanish every night (we don't speak Spanish, but it's fine), but that's the only homework. His teacher seems kind but capable and really knows her kids, and their strengths and weaknesses. We had to choose between this school and Farragut Elementary, and La Ballona felt like a bit of a gamble. However we took it and already we are pleased we went with the immersion option.
