0 stars if i could, this school is terrible
It is very true that a teacher can either make a child successful or can break him/her! At Brookvale elementary they have teachers and a principal who can break your child! I am just amazed that just after my child's first day at kindergarten they managed to do it with such a ease!! Due to financial reasons we decided to pull out my child from a private school to public school. I made mistake by putting faith in public school system and got fooled by ratings! The teachers don't have time to help your child in the middle of the year to help him settle in the new school even though teacher student ratio was 12:1. I landed him pulling out and he is back in a private school. Public schools like this because of teachers and principal are disgrace to humanity!!!
The school has teachers who are a mixed bag. The Principal is approachable but unless the teacher reports anything to her, she just ignores you. The IEP team is great and supportive. My child dealt with English as a second language and got SLP--who was nice and supportive. My biggest problem was that our child's first grade teacher had no control over the class. Through out the year he was not just bullied but abused by some of his classmates. Kids poking pencils in his rear end, locking him into the bathroom, and hitting him on his head or stomping on his hands. The Principal told me that they don't have a zero tolerance policy and some aggressive kids stopped but others continued their bad behavior. Generally speaking, approaching the parents was more helpful instead of going through the teacher. I understand that kids but the teacher needs to make sure that she can control her class. Unfortunately this year--I did not get that feeling. However, the kindergarten class was much better run as despite the high number of troubled kids in that classroom, the teacher had an upper hand. My child is an introvert but never troubles another soul. He is also one of the youngest kids in that class. I found myself apologizing for my child's behavior several times. The teacher basically reminded us that the kid has to stand up for himself and deal with it himself. This is for a kid who is 6 years old.
Teachers are nice and great! Also parents are very helpful. I believe school will be better and better....
