I have 2 students at Cunha. I wish I could say that this school cares about the students but you are just a number here. If you have a child struggling academically, they offer no support system to help. If you are not in the "it" club of parents that are friends with staff members, your child has a big disadvantage. Your child will not make it on certain sports teams because you are not friends with the staff. Forget volunteering because again if your not in the "it" club, you will not be choosen. Staff, spouses and friends will be choosen before you, no matter if you volunteered before anyone else or not. The administration only walks around trying to look like they are open to interaction with parents. They really do not want to talk to you but would rather be huddled with the counselors talking, so they can avoid you at all costs. I really hope that the school board sees the things going on at this school and gets people in here who care about the kids.

Cunha Intermediate School is in the Cabrillo Unified School District and serves grades 6, 7, and 8 in the coastal area of Half Moon Bay, 25 miles south of San Francisco. Cunha helps students make the transition between elementary and high school. The school culture is grounded in the tradition of educating the "whole" person. Students and staff work hard to promote academic success and positive behavior. There are two full time counselors for a student body of approximately 780 students. The counselors work closely with the students on their academic, personal, social and emotional needs. The school provides a safe, nurturing environment where all students, parents and staff strive to meet high academic standards and promote lifelong learning. Cunha is committed to a student-centered learning environment where every student is encouraged to seek his or her maximum potential. Scholarship, the ability to reason, as well as civic and social consciousness is the cornerstone of their mission. Cunha will inspire all students to reach high academic expectations, think critically and creatively, become responsible citizens, value diversity and individual self worth, as well as pursue continual growth. The principal at the school, Mike Andrews, is a wonder! He seems to know all of his 700+ students by name. He is at the parking lot every afternoon at release. I suspect that is when he has the most face time with the families who don't have good (or bad) reasons to visit the prinicpal. He is at every board meeting and dance to shake hands and thank parent volunteers for their participation and really seems to enjoy and respect the kids. Although we are in a financially challenged district, I am grateful that Cunha offers an elective option of daily band and PE five days a week for everyone. The positive reinforcement for good grades and behavior with field trips and students of the week/month do a lot to motivate students who may otherwise think it is "cool" not to excel. The administration at the school and district level is working on community building and bully prevention at all of the school sites. This is really a two language district and the administration is working very hard to try to bridge the gap between the two communities in the area. The many sports teams, famously fun dances, and the Boys and Girls Club on campus are additional highlights of the school.

There are a few great teachers at Cunha. The Principal needs to learn how to handle bullying in a proactive way instead of turning his head. My daughter no longer goes to Cunha due to the fact she was not safe nor were her educational needs met.
