I am so happy our children got a district transfer to Kenwood. The teachers are kind, helpful, responsible, and are truly invested in their students. It seems like new teachers are hired on after longtime teachers retire. We have the pleasure of one of the newest teachers educating our son this year, and she has been amazing. Interactive learning, not bogged down with homework, and fair. Having such great staff speaks highly for the Principal as well. Principal Bales knows every kids name, as well as their siblings and parents, and is funny, approachable, and well liked by teachers, parents, and community members. My children excel in academics here, each reading several grades above their current. The class size is small, so whenever they have struggled with a new concept, each teacher has been able to assist. My kids are truly interested in learning because they are supported and encouraged. The teachers value each student individually, and are there to help after hours if needed. We LOVE Kenwood School!
Many good things, but change is impossible at this school. The Supt./Principal is very comfortable in his job and the teachers do what they do. They always tout how they have so many great teachers apply for positions, and then hire a brand new inexperienced teacher for 4th Grade this year. The socio/emotional component is great, but the classroom rigor leave a lot to be desired.
Kenwood is a great school with outstanding teachers and admin staff. Unlike so many other grade schools, the parents of Kenwood students are very involved and manage to raise quite a bit of money. The school is also unique because it comprises its own school district. As a result, it isn't at the mercy of budget battles that vex the Santa Rosa and Sonoma school districts. Lunches (always fresh, no fast food, no soda) are cooked from scratch in the school kitchen. Extracurricular activities are varied: there's choir, yoga, garden club, etc. and the school has a nice after-school childcare program called Cougar Club which is very convenient and affordable for working parents. The school grounds are very peaceful and scenic, safe, and relaxed. The only downside to Kenwood is that it's located in the middle of the Sonoma valley, between Santa Rosa and Sonoma. Even so, this doesn't deter Sonoma parents (60 percent of Kenwood kids are from Sonoma) from making the 10 mile drive to arguably the best grade school in the valley. Not surprisingly, there is often a waiting list for inter-district transfers.
