Springhill Elementary School

My children love their Springhill teachers. During distance learning their teachers have exceed our expectations and we confident our children won’t be behind and can’t wait to be back on campus!

Springhill is a wonderful little school. My daughter’s teachers are fantastic and have gone above and beyond. They have exceeded most parents expectations with the distance learning. It is a strong community with dedicated teachers and parents. I love the kindness campaign that was started in our community by a mother at our school. My daughters love their teachers and are Springhill Proud.

Springhill is one of the smallest schools in Lafayette. It has a close community that generously gives financial and volunteer support to offset the State's paltry K-12 funding (thanks, Prop 13). The parent community is very involved and many volunteer at the school. Each day over 25 parents sign in as volunteers who help with classroom math and reading, support, field trips, lunch service, spirit events, school holiday celebrations, etc. The parent volunteers add a ton of value, enrich the children's experience, and provide the 'village' that is needed to help children feel loved and secure.The teachers I have encountered are dedicated and effective. Differentiation tends to lean toward those on the less able end of the scale, but my child finds ways to learn beyond the classroom. The standardized test scores are lower than other Lafayette schools as there are several classes of special ed children. This is not a bad thing, though, as the special ed kids spend time in a regular classroom, in addition to their special ed classroom. This integration is good for all kids. The special ed kids learn from the mainstreamed kids and feel part of a large community. And, the mainstreamed kids learn to appreciate and celebrate kids with different abilities, Each year, there is a Special Olympics that the older classes attend and cheer on the olympians. I'm amazed at how the kids learn that kids with disabilities are just like them and should be treated as equals and with kindness. There is no teasing and the kids learn to be unfazed by other kids with disabilities.The school does a great job instilling positive character traits in the students. I've not heard of bullying behavior. The principal seems to be providing effective leadership after a rough patch. This occured after a long-time principal retired. His replacement was at the school only two years and never successfully became a part of the community. After her resignation in July (!), an interim principal was named. He brought a lot of positive energy and helped to right the Springhill ship after two years of poor leadership. The new permanent principal is experienced and was a teacher at the school. So far, she seems to be good for the school.So, in all, Springhill is a very good school.

Springhill is definitely on the mend! After a rough few years with the principal who replaced Bruce Wodhams, the school atmosphere is peaceful once again. The interim, Mr. G., was just what we needed! And everyone is so excited about the new principal who was recently hired to start next year. She used to work at the school and will bring great experience and enthusiasm. She also has a special ed background and that will be beneficial since this is the special ed hub for the district. Lots of families of children with special needs move to our district to attend Springhill.
