I was very unhappy in the manner in which the administration deals with bullying and the lack of support it gave my child's teacher. Principal seems afraid to be called out as racist in dealing with bullying, which only empowers the bully. As a result of her inaction, it runs rampant in the school.

Garfield is a horrible school to send your child.High descrimination, bullying and disrespect towards the students and parents. Students are treated very unfairly by the staff and teachers. It is not a safe environment. As parents we don't believe the teachers are properly qualified to teach our children academically. If we could change our child to a different school, we would, but unfortunately our local schools in the west side of Long Beach are highly neglected by the school district.

If you have a child w/ a disability or have a 504 Plan in place they will discriminate against your child. If you fight for your child's rights your child will not be treated fairly. Your child will not be allowed to attend field trips & they will find any way to get your child not to participate in any type of school activity yet not help provide accomodations. From what I have researched & after speaking to advocates for children with disabilities, this school has violated SECTION 504 & compliance. They will tell you that there is no funding for evaluations so that your child will not get evaluated or have a request put in to get him evaulated. The only way they will do it or meet with you is if you fight & speak to the district. They do not have anyone who has any experience with children with ADHD & OCD nor will they get the district to make accomodations for your child. They will treat/say ADHD is a behavior issue & not a disability. They will tell you their psychologist is on maternity leave instead of getting the district to place a temporary psychologist to assist & evaluate your child. Make sure you make everything in writing as far as requests as they will drag you on.

My daughter has been attending this school since kindergarten. We have always had pleasant experiences with the school staff. They are always helpful and supportive. One particular instance, my daughter was bullied before school on a Friday. I emailed the principal as soon as I found out (it was on a Friday evening). The principal took care of the situation immediately Monday morning. This is a caring and nurturing school!
