We are so happy at Glenfeliz. The staff is amazing and truly cares about each students' emotional and academic success. They play outside a lot, learn gardening and cooking skills in addition to their academics. My child literally skips to school each day. The students are kind, the principal is accessible to work with the parents to help your child succeed. When I asked my child his favorite thing about Glenfeliz he said, "the teachers are nice." Additionally, my child was reading at above grade level and they were able to work with him to make sure he was being challenged.
I love this little school in our neighborhood- the best part is the kids. They definitely nurture kindness and friendship at this school. I also like how they have three options of after school programs. One of them, Glenfeliz Kids, is run by their parent booster club and is so well run.
Ignore the test scores and ratings -- they are meaningless! This is a GREAT, GREAT school -- child-focused, intelligently managed and very stable. The teachers are passionate, super-experienced and exceedingly competent. There is almost no turnover. The principal is amazing -- frank, kind and extremely professional. She will know your child by name the first week of school. The teachers are happy and deeply committed. The staff is smart and helpful. DON'T BE FOOLED BY SCORES. They are lower at Glenfeliz than at some other area schools for a simple reason: Glenfeliz is much more ethnically and socio-economically diverse than the more sought-after schools in the area -- and trust me, this is a good thing, not a bad thing! But don't worry. If your child is an academic high achiever, he or she will find a place here. There are lots of gifted kids, and they get lots of specialized attention. If your child needs academic help, he or she will likewise get it here, and you will have a teacher understands and works with you. If you live in Atwater, and you DON'T send your child to Glenfeliz, you have been hoodwinked! If someone tells this school is a no-go, ASK THEM HOW THEY KNOW. Chances are, they have never been inside this sweet, sensibly run, creative little neighborhood school. We know; we switched from one of those over-crowded, sought-after schools, and we have been exceedingly happy with our choice. If you are swayed by scores or reputation, go elsewhere. But if you want a diverse, vibrant, urban public school where your child will get a rigorous education and also have fun and just get to be a kid go to Glenfeliz. Added bonuses: terrific garden program, and the best afterschool programs in the district.
