While we loved the atmosphere and friendliness of the school and the strong parental involvement. We went from having a happy well-adjusted child to one that was subject to systemic and chronic bullying. Unfortunately, the school did not recognize or address the children who were always at the center of such abuse. The children who were subject to such bullying lived in fear. We witnessed this many times and we made a point for the teachers and staff to be more in tune with supervisory roles especially during recess and PE where this seemed to occur the most. The last thing we wanted to do was to single out children. We wanted to invoke change for the better. I felt they turned a blind eye in order to not cause waves with some if the more active parents.

We truly enjoy being a part of this community. The ability to learn standardized tests and accomplish home work has no bearing on the level of intelligence an elementary student has. I understand the research, its been proven that teaching to tests doesn't help our children become strong thinkers and can stifle a teaching environment. This community does it's best at providing a balanced place where you can have both-- social emotional + academic rigor. I believe people will look to this school in the future as actually 'being ahead of the curve' due to it's progressive approach and we're thrilled to be a part of it.

Look past the low academic rating!!! Walgrove was not our district school, but after touring what was supposed to be our school we were in a bit of a panic. That school was rated 8/10 and as a language immersion school it was highly sought out. But it seemed very rigid, and art/music/theater/PE etc. all seemed relegated to after school programs. Our daughter might have been well educated, but she needed more than academics . Then we found Walgrove. Walgrove has a huge campus where the kids can roam the Wildlands and the garden, and the arts are integral to daily instruction. More importantly, the teachers work towards developing the whole child. We are currently only in kindergarten, but my daughter was painfully shy her whole life, and now she had friends in every grade, speaks comfortably to other kids and adults, and shows confidence in her ideas and abilities. These skills will serve her far better than the number of sight words she has memorized! And as far as that goes, she chose when she wanted to start really learning to read and progressed from 2 words to grade proficiency in a matter of weeks, all self-directed with excellent support from her teacher. Most days we cannot drag her away from school even at 6:30 at night when they are locking the gates!
