As the parent of a sophomore, I am extremely pleased with not only the teachers and how much they care about the students, but the outstanding administration. About 5 years ago, there was significant turn over in the administration and subsequently the teachers. I have seen huge improvements in both the quality of education and the outcomes of the students attending. Of course it's not perfect, but no school is. I would much rather have my children at Johansen than some of the more "affluent" campuses where the drug and bullying problems are hidden and swept under the rug in order to keep their reputations looking good. However, talk to the students - they know what's going on. Thank you Mr. Schar and faculty at Johansen for providing a real, quality education!

I graduated from Johansen last year and am now finishing my first year at UCLA. In my experience, a majority of teachers truly cared about students' lives in and out of the classroom and many went out of their way to help struggling students. Of course there are teachers who have burned out, and the CA review process needs serious reform. Extracurricular activities were widely available and welcoming, and the "gang problem" has been highly exaggerated, though should continue to be scrutinized for the sake of student's safety. That being said, administration and campus officials seem strongly biased in allocating punishment based on personal favorites and "problem students" are often pushed to the wayside by counselors who refuse to help them get on track to a CSU/UC even when the student shows incredible determination. Nathan Schar has been an incredible principal, giving freely ans fighting hard for all of Johansen's students, teachers, and programs.
