I have two kids in the Piedmont schools (elementary and middle school) and I mixed feelings about some of the one-sided reviews of the Piedmont schools posted here. First, there are families that will gravitate towards each other. In your family, does the mom not work and want to have a strong social life? Guess what - there are other moms like this and they can connect with each other. Do both parents work and have a less active social life but still want to make friends (like my family)? There are a lot of families like you too. I also strongly disagree with the "Not wealthy. Out" comment. I live in an average house, drive mid-range Japanese cars, and have NEVER been shunned by other families that have way more money. Are there families that prefer to be with other families that have similar amounts of money? Sure. But that's not the standard. That is far outside exception and I haven't found them in my circles.Academics are strong. Could they be stronger? Absolutely. Math is appropriate and well taught but writing in general needs some teaching leadership. Some teachers are fantastic at teaching students writing - others are not. I'm pretty sure this is common across all schools and all districts. Also, a lot of the complaints are due to mandates by California. Piedmont is doing it's best to operate within the constraints of the state, but in the student's best interests. One writer said Piedmont is, "without a shred, actually a hint of tolerance," for, "diversity-social, economic, racial and cultural differences." This is a complete fabrication and the writer bought into a popular stereotype. Is Piedmont diverse? No. Are there a lot of socio-economic differences in the families that live here? No. Can Piedmont control who buys a home in Piedmont? Also - No. However, the residents of Piedmont are overwhelmingly liberal (>20% registered republican), and have a liberal mindset which values diversity-social, economic, racial and cultural differences. My kid have friends that are jewish, muslim, black, asian, and indian and they ALL live in Piedmont too. What stands out about Piedmont is that it is small tightly knit community of great people. The police, fire department, teachers, and all city officials are part of the community and expected to (and do) model the values of the city residents. Piedmont is a wonderful place for children and for them to obtain a great eduction.

We moved to the area from out of State based on the reputation on the school. But what a disappointment! The school is very mediocre, in all aspect except the human one ( staff very friendly). They are doing in 6th grade what others states have done in 4th grade, specially in English. There are basically behind great State by at least one full year! The don't have gifted program, that don't challenge the kids in any subject. They are bringing them to the lowest common denominator. Don'' be blinded that by the test/score in any of the other school ( elementary and High school as well). California Standard is one of the lowest in the nation. Our kids, who are bilingual ( English is a second language) are going to school like they are going to vacation! Nothing really new to learn, and never challenged. We have one in Elementary ( they treat the kids like babies, most of the kids don't write, produce neat work, some kids are even bored but nothing is done to keep them learning - I do volunteer a lot) 2 in Middle School and one in High School ( no IP an no IB offered ). As least they have good friends and a healthy social life.

I have gone to Piedmont Middle School for over two years(I still attend) and I have gotten a great education and had great oppurtunities here. All the teachers are wonderful, and offer extra help if needed. Everyone is really supportive of ALL students, and ASB helps to make the school a great place to be. Go Mrs. Lippy! :)
