Kennedy has really turned around in the past few years and offers great electives that other RCSD K-8 schools do not, including the only middle school music program in the city. Art, new STEM electives that the PTO has helped support financially, technology, robotics are just some of the electives to choose from. The PTO is very active and is raising more money every year to support the teachers with supplies, supporting the outdoor education field trips (Yosemite in 6th grade and Grand Canyon in 7th grade). This is a great, diverse, caring atmosphere for students from all walks of life. Many RCSD K-8 schools do not offer advanced math (Algebra 1) in 8th grade and parents end up coming to Kennedy for the advanced classes. Kennedy even has higher Algebra 1 completion rates than Roy Cloud. Come take a tour, the 2019-2020 school year is off to a great start with our new front office and parking lot/drop off lane getting finished this year. Upgraded classrooms are coming soon thanks to RWC voters!

We feel strongly that our 8th grader will be well prepared for high school next year. At Kennedy, he has had some phenomenal teachers and a very supportive administration. The music (band/orchestra) program is fantastic (including jazz band). There are now many electives for the kids to choose from. I love that the new leadership has added and modified classes to address gaps in the curriculum. It is a wonderfully diverse environment that brings students from all walks of life together.

We have had a great experience at this school as it provided my two children with advanced placement/accelerated classes including math classes that were not provided at other RCSD K-8 locations as they don't have enough qualified students for separate advanced tracks. We also love the elective choices that are not available at K-8 schools, like art, drama, journalism, band and orchestra. In fact, Kennedy is the only school that has music as a dedicated elective and not just an after school activity. This is key to being successful in music in high school. The Spanish Immersion program at Adelante is continued at Kennedy and from what I have seen (not in that program) the Adelante families are pleased to have their Spanish immersion continue while also having access to great electives and advanced math and ELA classes. Past reviews should be disregarded if you are considering Kennedy for your child. Things have changed a lot over the past 3-4 years. Visit and tour, and you will see a well run, large school with a diverse student body and strong leadership. I almost forgot to mention awesome field trip opportunities! If you find learning outside of school in the real world is important, this is the school for you! Sixth graders work with Marine Science Institute doing science in kayaks on the bay and at a local park throughout the year, and have the opportunity to go on a week long trip to Yosemite. Seventh graders have the chance to go to the Grand Canyon for 10 days on a unique trip that has been running for almost 40 years (with some chaperones going year after year for 15-20 years, it's a fabulous and relatively affordable experience where the kids bond like you wouldn't believe). And 8th graders have the chance to go on a 5 day trip to Washington DC with the 8th grade social studies teacher. You don't get programs like this at smaller schools. Socially, my kids have thrived and have gotten to know kids from all over Redwood City.

The current Kennedy is not reflective of comments that were left on this site years ago. They've brought in new leadership, and things are moving in a much better direction. My child has had a very good middle school experience.
