Love the IB program, but it is true that outside a select few colleges there doesn't seem to be a good translation for the program. Our child is a sophomore and enjoying Band, pre-IB math, pre-IB History and Honors chemistry. Issues with retaining teachers effected experience in Spanish and English. Plenty of safe spaces on campus; good social interactions and positive, diverse population.
I am currently a Junior at Sequoia High School and I couldn't be happier. When I was a freshman I went into the counsellor's office to talk about my schedule and after I told her that I wanted to be a nurse in the future she introduced me to the Health Careers Academy. It's the most amazing program because I really feel like I'm learning things that will help me in the future. All of my academy classes have pretty much the same students and I finally know people outside of the friend group I've had since kindergarden. The teachers are nice a engaging, somehow my old history teacher made lectures exiting!!! Sometimes you'll get a really bad teacher but for the most part it's a great school, much better then Woodside. Really wouldn't recomend going to Woodside. I have many firends who have gone there and fights break out often, it's a very hostile environment and I've never seen a single fight at Sequoia. Sequoia is a very open and accepting of different cultures, beliefs, and sexualities. We have a day every year where people can get "married" to anyone they want, straight people, gay people, anyone can get married! You get rainbow colored rings and the event is put on by the gay straight alliance club at Sequoia at lunch. Sequoia has a lot of fun events and it's a genuinely fun place to go to school. So happy this is my school.
As a student I think Sequoia is one of the most unqualified schools in the district. This school does not care about their students. The teachers are unqualified and when students attempt to address these issues the administration brushes it off. If you want to be removed from a class with a teacher who makes you feel unsafe and doesn't support your learning they tell you that the teacher has to approve your transfer. Their math and science departments are severely lacking and the teachers are completely unqualified and often miss classes frequently. Overall, Sequoia is a terrible school which does not even offer many AP classes and many colleges don't recognize IB credits so you have no credits going into college. I am working on transferring schools for senior year due to how horrible this school is.
For a student who is insecure and scared of other like me, I think this high school is the best high school in Redwood City. This school made me feel confident about myself with the friendly teachers and well mannered students. loved it.
