We have two kindergartners at Flynn this year. Flynn was our first choice because of the school leadership, the feeling of community evident on our tour, and how intentionally they build that community - celebrating individuals, connecting between the Spanish Immersion and English tracks, and being culturally aware. Now that we're in remote school, we are SO impressed with Flynn! The teachers have done a remarkable job making remote kindergarten engaging, interesting, and educational. Our twins are learning to read, in Spanish, over Zoom! I also really appreciated their recent approach to Thanksgiving, reading a book about a different Native American tribe each day.
After 12 school tours in SFUSD, this was our top pick by far. It was the school I felt would teach my child not just new content, but how to be a thoughtful member of a community. I have not been disappointed. Our experience has been unique because it's been entirely remote during the COVID-19 pandemic, but I feel that every person we've met, from administrators to teachers to support staff have been incredible. They have reinvented their curriculum and created something digestible, engaging, and creative. We've had multiple teachers and administrators reach out to us to make sure we could navigate the complexities of the system and even offer one on one help for parents struggling with managing remote learning for their kids. I am so grateful to be part of this school community.
We're really happy with Flynn. So much of the community lives close by and walks from Bernal, Noe Valley and the Mission. The school community is strong and the love from the teachers and families is really special. The PTA has rallied during COVID to provide the social worker with funds to aid families who are struggling financially and I have been impressed with how the school support systems have worked hard to focus on serving families.
Our second-grader loves Flynn and we do, too. It is a dynamic and intersting place to be a student and has a wonderful, supportive parent community. The school score above really does not reflect the quality of the teaching or the students; it's important to know that these scores are skewered by the fact that half of Flynn's students are in a dual-immersion program and much of the total student population are not native English speakers. This puts the school at a great disadvantage in standardized tests, particularly the 3rd grade tests when many of the kids are still mastering English language reading and writing. I really cannot emphasize enough how divorced this GreatSchool grade is from the reality of this school, including it's fantastic teachers and wonderful student population. This is a gem of a school! My only complaint is that the school building is starting to show its age; it's a big classic schoolhouse but it could use an upgrade (which we understand may happen soon). But this is nothing the kids notice; it works great for them and they love the place.
