This is the 2nd year my child has been at this school - he is currently a first grader. Academically my child has been at about average to above average. He is smart but has some behavioral issues that hinder his social/interpersonal relationships in school as well as his ability to focus. His kindergarten teacher was terrific - we had almost daily conversations on how my child's day went and where he needed improvement. And we would tag-team to work with him on how he could make better choices and better interactive with classmates. He improved throughout the year. And this year, he has an amazing first grade teacher. She and I have also have an open dialogue and we tag-team to continue to help my child do better. We share techniques and how we each can help reinforce certain positive behaviors. The teachers at Madison really do care about our children. Other teachers really step up when my child felt overwhelmed and needed a break from his class. These are some of the most dedicated and amazing teachers I've encountered. Our PTO is very active and hard working for our kids. I do like the Principal's regularly scheduled monthly coffee chats with parents/caretakers - he is very invested in our children to succeed academically and socially. I try to attend his coffee chats when I can. My child has had much interaction with the Principal, and he has always found the best way to calm my child and get him re-engaged and passionate about learning. Unless things take a dramatic negative turn, we plan to stay at this school as we believe in its core values and the dedication the faculty has demonstrated towards our children.
My son has attended this school in Kendergarten and is now in 1st grade. Mr. Grotkhe is a wonderful principal and has been there for years. The PTA is very dedicated and work hard for the students and the school. My son didn't have a great Kinder teacher, but it was her first year teaching and she is no longer there. My son's 1st grade teacher is amazing! If you email her with a question she responds almost immediately. My son is learning so much from his class garden, and she gives great feedback on what he is doing good in and what needs improvement. The students from Kinder to 5th grade are all nice to each other. I see it during breakfast on the cafeteria as well as on the playground before the morning bell rings. They obviously respect each other because the parents teach them and the staff at James Madison advocate for it.I love this school!
