Initially, felt lucky to be accepted at Travis Elem. However, was disappointed to find that teacher seemed to be more concerned in reading class with open book tests, allowing students to read their texts aloud, to each other in pairs and listen to recording of material instead of actually talking about the content. Was also sad to find that teachers were more interested in handing out completely unreadable test scoring data rather than talking about the child. Finally, had only one or two opportunities per year to actually sit and talk with the teacher was not enough to feel that teacher has real grasp of my childs potential academic strengths and weaknesses. And, it always seemed odd to me that the PTA was never really involved with curriculum problems but was only called upon to raise money through endless parade of fundraising events. Nevertheless, I felt that my child improved during year.

Yes it's true, Travis is one of the highest scoring schools in Solano county. The fact that it is located inside Travis Air Force Base and largely attended by children of military personnel may account for the excellent scores. In my opinion (and I'm not military), military children tend to be well disciplined & academically advanced (their parents are high raking officers, maybe?) Then there are the kids that come from the neighborhoods outside Travis AFB who are a reflection of urban life & attitude. Interesting mix. However, it is to the principal & teacher's credit that their high expectations of the students resulted in a powerhouse school. Programs such as Accelerated Reading & Math are a series of self paced exams which no doubt prepares the students for standardized tests. Picking up kids is cumbersome, taking the school bus helps.

My son went from 1st-6th at Travis Elemntary and my two daughters K-5th so far! The educators are stellar and really care about the children. I'm thrilled with the API results year after year. I'm keeping my kids in the TUSD as long as I possibly can!
