Grace Hudson Elementary School is a Dual Language Immersion model. All students are taught in Spanish and English, with a full immersion model. In Kindergarten, 90% of the instruction time is in Spanish, working up to 50/50 in English and Spanish by third grade. Because of the dual language model, TEST SCORES FOR THIS SCHOOL ARE VERY UNRELIABLE AND DECEPTIVE. Don't be fooled! All students are tested in English. Because their instruction is mostly in Spanish for the first few years, the school overall does not fare well in standardized test scores for the lower grades. But if you really care about data, take a deeper look at the scores in fourth and fifth grade. Once you factor in socio-economic status, the test scores for this school are super high. It's a fabulous learning environment for any family who values diversity, values a second language, and wants their child to be stimulated and challenged in school. Also, if your family follows through with the Dual Language model through to high school, your child will graduate with a Seal of Biliteracy on their High School Diploma. Awesome!

The Great Schools rating of 2 out of 10 is not indicative of the quality of education at this school, which has been very good. The school serves a working Latino community as well as the caucasion community in the poorer section of town, but is the only school in the district where enrollment is increasing due to parents choosing this school over others in the area. The teachers are excited about the Spanish immersion program and are very passionate, engaged, and highly competent. I have my two children at this school, and my wife and I both have advanced degrees. Poor test scores only show that many of the students have English as a second language, which is the language of the standardized tests. My second graders are reading and writing in Spanish, and have a broad Spanish vocabulary and can conjugate their verbs. They are also doing math at the appropriate level for their grade. This is a very good school.
