As a parent involved at Sky Vista, I’ve been very underwhelmed by the lack of accountability for students there. The teachers spend more time playing pranks on each other and hiding their belongings than actually teaching kids. Cell phones run rampant and there is no policy for using cell phones in class. My kids say that kids text and call during class and then meet each other in the bathrooms and in the hallways. Since the newest principal took over, test scores have gone down year after year. My kids go to something called Power Hour for 30 minutes during the week which is meant to help kids who are struggling and also help kids who are ahead, but the kids that are ahead just sit in front of a computer while their teacher works with a few kids. The kids have also figured out that attendance is difficult to track during Power Hour so they hide in bathrooms. It feels like a big waste of time and my kids know it. In addition to declining test scores, the principal has very low expectations for kid behavior. I volunteered at lunch and was appalled by the kids just running around, leaving trash everywhere, swearing, running in and out of the bathrooms, and stealing each other’s phones. This will be one of those schools that never recovers until new leadership is in place and the culture of the school and staff is addressed.

Excellent! We have been pleased with Sky Vista all around.

The new admin has moved from another CCSD middle school which had a lot of problems. This admin pushed high school level sex ed into a mandatory 7th grade PE/Health curriculum - without parental disclosure. This admin pushed scientifically inaccurate, "pop culture" sex ed lessons into its mandatory PBIS or "respect" classes - without parental disclosure. Parents should also watch out for the 8th grade comprehensive sex ed and the special, extracurricular "relationship" book clubs. Don't wait for parent letters to come home - this admin is secretive about its agenda and parents should ask questions, ask to see all lessons, and be proactive.

Parents of Sky Vista, with our new principal and a new administration, expect a lot of changes. It is important that we review all course content and be aware of comments your child might say about their day in school and their teachers.Expect a sharp deviation away from academics and toward a heavy emphasis on social re-engineering in PBIS, Health, Safety, Anti-bullying, Comprehensive Sex Ed, and, so-called, Inclusiveness training. These courses will take a decidedly activist posture with delivery of LGBTQ messaging, aimed at our children. It seems to be a pattern repeated wherever this administrator has been in a decision making position. If you are OK with the diversion of resources from academics, toward LGBTQ content, then that is fine; but as parents, it is important that we have all the information necessary to make an informed decision, in the best interests of our children. You will not get this information willingly from this principal. It will be hidden and very hard to find and the administration will do its utmost to avoid transparency when it comes to these issues. This will make it difficult for you to make a truly informed decision. There is an agenda at play and it does not include transparency and disclosure to parents.
