My boys attended Highland Elementary for the first time in 2017. It took me almost a full year to figure out the culture. The principle wants to take control of every situation. Therefore, every small problem that happens in the classroom is not handled by the teacher and is instead sent to the principles office. This takes the power and authority away from the teachers. There is disruptive behavior, no respect for authority or for peers, and poor consequences for these children! The consequences are often taking recess away from the child or discussing your behavior with the principle. The principle does not give equal punishment to each child. Instead of having them sit in her office, make these kids clean the baseboards, clean out the trash cans, or do other dirty work that will make them not want to misbehave again. This school NEEDS better leadership!

My daughter entered kindergarten here excited to begin school. She has always loved learning and is very bright. We soon found out that she was destined to fail at this school. They focus, almost exclusively, on reading and writing. In kindergarten here, the child will fail at writing if their letters aren't perfect. My child can't seem to hold still, so we have been giving her medication to help her be calm- she still isn't calm enough so yet another dr. appointment to up her dosage. Perhaps if she had a hands on curriculum? Or Project-Based? I'll tell you what she does get, red notes sent home if she talks too much, recess taken away when she can't sit still, and the books she used to LOVE to try and read, she avoids. There is so much more to education than perfect marks on paper- we are taking our child out of this school district before the love of learning is disciplined out of her.

My son is in Kindergarten and we love everything about this school and this district! It has a very genuine, loving, small town school vibe and the principal is one of the kindest people we have met! The teachers are wonderful and go above and beyond. The kids take art, Spanish, P.E., music, and computer classes too! Also, they have a recreation league that kids of ALL ages (even Kindergarten) can participate in!
