I was quite hesitant to enroll my child in school at Chester Shell Elementary. I will give both the negatives and positives in this review to be fair. Her first week was a huge shock! The Negatives: The class size was not 13 students to 1 teacher as it states on this page; it was 23 : 1. It is now in fact 25 to 1. By the first week she was seriously bullied on the bus and told by the bully he was going to get a gun and shoot her pet. This occurred just after the school shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School. I called the school immediately. The administration was swift to step in, address the bully and parents, and promised the bully would no longer be on the bus. The next morning, the bully was on the bus. The bully apologized, yet the bully rides every morning. Now for the Positives: My child loves her teacher, the administration, and adores her fellow students. She is engaged, challenged, and thriving academically. The bullying has stopped and she has the courage to ride the bus regardless of the threats she endured.

Hawthorne is a small town with a big heart. One of our passions are our schools. The community and school staff work hand in hand to provide a wonderful school experience for our children. I call it a public school with a private school feel. The needs of all children are addressed equally and with care and great attention. The ESE/Gifted teachers are wonderful and make sure each student learns and works to their highest potential. The class sizes are small enough that every student gets the attention they need. My daughter has been a student there since Kindergarten (she is a 4th grader currently) and every staff member knows our family by name. They always welcome parent involvement. There are many ways that parents can become involved from the PTA to volunteering in the classroom. There are many activities for the kids to be involved in, including chorus, Girl Scouts, math or reading clubs (and many more). If there are ever any problems or questions the staff will address those immediately, responding to phone calls and emails within hours (at the latest). The staff, along with community and parent support, are constantly working to better the entire school experience for the students by applying for grants for tools/supplies and arranging fun and engaging after school activities for the kids- My favorite is Spooky Science night when the kids come dressed up and stop at different stations to do science experiments. All in all, our experience at Shell Elementary school has been an extremely positive one.

One of my two children attend Shell and I am a very active parent with school and have loved the attention that my child receives and the opportunity's that my child gets by being part of a small school. My Daughters first grade class is only 18 students and she is constantly being praised and given additional work because she is a little bit faster than other students. I Love how all of the teachers make it a point to find out your name even if they are not your childs teacher and how every teacher no matter what grade they teach knows who your child is how all of the teachers participate in school activities. As PTA Treasurer I know first had how we need more parent involvement in the school and for the school.

I have been employed at Shell for 22 years. Students, staff, parents and the community are proud of this school. We're not perfect, but in our eyes we 5 stars out of 5. Our teachers are the best in the world. Our principal is deligently making gains. Thank you to all who have stepped on our grounds, please continue to be involved. --Respectfully.
