Where to Live
Westside’s Ortega area offers elegant waterfront homes with Tudor-style architecture and lies close to many natural amenities. Riverside and Avondale consists of structures built in the 1930’s, and is well known for its bars and walkability. The farther west you go, the lower the price, though your selection varies between multifamily units and single-story housing.
Where to Eat
Riverside and Avondale offer plenty of high-end and hole-in-the-wall establishments that are well-known throughout the city and frequented by the locals. Ortega has relatively small amount of car traffic, and offers a quiet dining experience filled with a range of Southern eateries that you can walk to from many of the local parks.
What You'll See
The Westside is a microcosm for the city at large. You will find multi-generational families living next to young professionals, living harmoniously and constructively with each other. Riverside is much more relaxed, home to artists with very eclectic forms of fashion and personality. Ortega is much more reserved, preferring business casual and keeping with a more traditional vibe.
Friday Night Fun
Head out to one of the King Street bars where, you will find a multitude of clubs, bar, and low-key restaurants. Hit up Sun Ray Cinema if you’re looking to drink a beer and watch a film, or down to the Argyle shopping center where you can shop to your heart’s content before enjoying an evening meal with your family.
The Perfect Sunday
Visit the Jacksonville Equestrian Center to see the very best in horse competitions. Cecil Field, once a Naval Air Station, is now a 30-mile trail system of pine flatwood and unpaved roads, providing the perfect escape for a family’s day out. A number of breweries are headquartered in the area and offer free tastings to anyone wanting a brew. Just be sure to get there early.
