I'm pleased as long as communication is open there will be no issues.

I attended Arthur and Polly Mays for two years and I have experienced in both the middle school and high school levels. The school is small and a lot of people live in the Goulds communities near by which means that everyone knows each other and everyone gets along relatively well (I believe that this year, 2014-2015, there have only been 3 fights). However, the area of the school can have a negative impact as well. Due to an incident in the area the school was forced into lock down and many students go to a gas station across the street after school where there was a shooting 2 years back. I was in dance magnet strand (Personally I think that the best strands to go into are Chorus, Art, Band, or Dance) so I have insight about it. I think that the dance teachers are very good at their job and very sweet but, my only critique is that one teacher receives only ballet classes for high school students and everyone constantly disrespects her (even the principle) which is unfortunate (plus she is the teacher who teaches real conservatory style classes out of the two). The other dance teacher is very kind and is friends with many kids but, she can be tough when she needs to so no one disrespects her (I prefer her choreography than the other teacher). Most of the magnet teachers are excellent and have experience in their field of study but the Academic teachers are the ones who everyone complains about. I can think of only 3 teachers from the top of my head who are not rude, racist, or simply does not care (and this is why I am leaving). Some teachers gossip with one another about students directly in front of the student or will gossip with the students about other students. Others will be completely raciest and call a "white" child out for doing the exact same thing as a "black" child. These academic teachers are so bad that one entire class failed their EOC because they were behind in the curriculum and the teacher did not come to school for 3 weeks prior to the test. I guess the best thing about this school is the end of the year showcase which is at the south dade cultural arts center. If you go basically gives you an idea of the best talent at the school. Lastly the school is in questionable condition since it is a old building but, they are beginning some heavy duty renovating so next year the campus may be in much better condition than it currently is.

Love this school it's so aMAYSing I love the dance program I'm in 6th and I am advanced in dance they let me dance with eigth graders so I don't stay behind I have learned so much and I have become so expressive with myself my parents are forcing me to go to southwood but I never want to leave mays conservatory it's the best school ever people think it's bad because of the location but it's not and they say you have to many black people well there are people from everywhere there are white hispanic Asian and they treat you like family the teachers care and they are very tough but just because they want you to do good they aren't even tough they just stop you from doing the bad things if you were to go somewhere it would be here it is a 6-12 and high schoolers bond very very good with middle schoolers it's almost unbelievable it's just the best school ever! Go Rams!! There are magnets which are chorus band drama art broadcasting creative writing dance and lots of other classes to experience.

My daughter has never been happier in a school as she is in Mays. Every morning she wakes up with enthusiasm and eager to go to school. I love the fact that she is able to experience chorus, dance, and drama since she is currently enrolled in the theatre program. I also love that the classes are small and the middle school counselor and faculty seem to really care about the students. However I have a problem with certain teachers who seem to be condescending, and disorganized. I have complained about this teacher several times, and when I speak to other parents I get multiple complains from that particular teacher as well. Nothing has been done about this. If a teacher does not want to teach or has a hard time teaching, understanding, and tolerating certain types of children (children with ADD, ADHD, DYSLEXIA) then they should not be teaching at all or at least they should get reprimanded!
