My child has been in the drama magnet program for the 3rd year now (5th grade) and I'm glad I'm done with this school. Had I known they were going to play the favoritism card, I would've never put my child in this school. You see the same handful of kids getting the lead parts for all the shows. Unless you are one of those parents that doesn't work and can spend countless hours every week volunteering (aka kissing you know what) so your kid will always get picked, don't bother. It sucks when your kid comes home all sad saying "so and so got the lead part AGAIN!". They should be fair and give other students a chance too. Also be prepared to dish out alot of money for donations, food and entrance fees for different events (which are ALL MANDATORY btw). The tickets to the holiday show and end of the year are super expensive....and then the drama teacher has the audacity to say NO PICTURES ALLOWED during the show. Sorry lady, but I paid way too much money not to take a picture of my kid on stage! They even make you buy dance sneakers and tap shoes that they barely even use! The list goes on! If you don't have the extra money to put your kid in real drama classes outside of school, then by all means choose this magnet school, but know what you're getting yourself into first!

This school is mediocre at best. the only thing that makes it good are some of the teachers. The old principal was not good and the new one is not much better. the PTA used to been run without any supervision whatsoever and had a president who did not even have a child at the school (strange don't you think?) I only had my child here because he was in a magnet program but even that did not make my decision seem worthwhile. worse thing i did was put my son here.

South Miami K-8 Center I'm giving this school a low rating mostly because of the way the administration handles situations. Although I have heard other parents complain, I can only speak for myself and my experience as a parent. My main complaint is the school's administration seemingly unwillingness to listen or validate a parent's concerns. My husband and I just went through quite an unpleasant experience just because we wanted answers as to why our son got hit by another kid during lunch. We made phone calls and sent emails as well as a letter asking for answers, and we were treated with no respect. We were constantly interrupted, and treated with an air of superiority and arrogance. Wow. Our son gets hit on his head hard enough to leave a big bump for a day and when we wanted to know more about the situation and the steps the school would take, we were made to feel like we were a nuisance to them. I find this disheartening and I am totally disappointed in this school's administration. My thoughts on this: if this school's administration doesn't listen and validate parents who are adults, I can only imagine how they treat the kids. A great school is not all about Fcat scores.
