When my mom joined the military in my fifth grade year, I moved from Bozeman MT, where I a had a good educational system, to Eglin AFB, and was shocked at the abysmal level of “education” that I was forced into at Oak Hill Elementary. There was NO science curriculum. There was NO math curriculum. There was NO English literature curriculum. There was NO worthwhile educational curriculum at all. There was no predefined curriculum of any kind. They had apparently abandoned any kind of teaching at all and resorted to the most basic of instruction: Trying to teach children to read – In the Fifth grade. I don’t mean to offend, but if you are still trying to teach children to read in the fifth grade, then you are doing something wrong.Instead of a formalized curriculum we were forced to work “Phonics” cards for the entirety of the day with no breaks or recess, in a pathetic attempt to “teach” 5th graders how to read. With no attention from any “teachers” we were supposed to focus on these ridiculous “Phonic Cards: as if they were they were a responsible substitute for an actual educationFind an alternative to sending you child here. I can tell you from experience, this is not a place of learning, it’s a purgatory.

I am currently a parent at this school. My 3 kids attend 3 different Orange County schools, Oak Hill elementary by far is the worst, from the front gate of the school to inside the classrooms. I have stressed my concerns to the principal who has yet to fix any issues concerning our meeting. I believe as a parent my concerns were taken lightly while the Principal gave me excuses on WHY theses things were happening. I am a hardworking parent who depends on her and her staff to educate my child to his highest ability. My son receives the same spelling word as my 4 year old VPK student. I asked for my son to be switched to another teacher and it was denied based on the fact that she will fix it. Since then my kindergardener was told to write I WILL NOT TALK WHEN AM NOT SUPPOSE TO, by his teacher as a whole class assignment. I have video of my sons class sitting in the hallway at 8:50 while his teacher is chatting in another class. All other students are in class. It bothers me to leave my child in a hallway, with student patrols and maybe 2 or 3 adults from K-5. Its a safety issue with all the school tragedies that has happened so that angers me as a parent that thats been able to go on since the first month of school August - May.

Oak Hill Elementary. I am disappointed my kids have to attend here when three blocks the other way is the much better system Metrowest Elementary school. Zoning places them with students who are poorer and have problems succeeding. However, they feed into the same middle and high school system. I feel the kids are set up to fail. The school has nice people but they seem disorganized and they lack basic activities for the children. I have seen parents switch their children out to a private school after a few months seeing the environment here. They spend a good deal of time teaching to the FCAT. And for children who are advanced students they really can't do anything to help them. They would benefit from truly strong leadership and sweeping changes.
