We have been very happy with this school. I have one student in the Center for Gifted Studies and one in the Traditional Fundamental Program. Both programs have phenomenal teachers. Our Guidance Counselor has been helpful in resolving any issues we have faced. The school recently got a new principal. We loved the old one, but the new one seems to be upholding the standard of excellency we have come to appreciate at this school.

Overall, She was forced to become more organized but experienced how bad school could be. The homework ruled our families life and there was no time for things outside of school. Most classes didn't even have textbooks but viewed the lessons in class and were still required to finish them at home if they didn't finish in class. A cell phone is a must because she had to take pictures of everything just to complete it. Without a group of friends to rely on for assignments missed she would have never made it through. They expected them to make up all class and homework assignments if they are absent by the next time they see them which meant double the work. It was very stressful if my daughter was sick and missed a day. There was no time for anything except school.

MR. SOLOMON LOWERY is no longer the principal of this school. This is the new principals first year as a principal and her work experience is mostly as a vice principal in under performing schools. It is definitely not a gifted environment. They beat the kids down and strip them of any creative thinking. The only positive thing I can say is they don't have fights in the halls. The fundamental contract is supposed to be a contract between parents and the school with each having their own responsibilities. Although they hold parents to every single rule they have instituted no one and I mean no one holds them accountable for their actions. Many rules are downright petty and unnecessary but they quote them like a bible. So much so that it is pretty much all they care about. These are no longer kids just robots meant to follow rules and do what they are told. They use the punishment for following rules to demean, harass , and embarrass otherwise good kids. So because they have a percentage of the population that acts poorly, all the children suffer. Many teachers are disorganized and unfriendly to parents and students, they have given incorrect writing assessments to students, in my experience there has been as least one teacher who cursed in the classroom, and they waste parents time and gas by making them wait in a poorly orchestrated dismissal process( sometimes 45 minutes) . They basically don't let parents anywhere near the building in order to hide what is really going on. One child peed his pants because there was no time to go to the bathroom and he couldn't get anyone's attention. Can you get through it, yes, but the real question is should you have to put up with it? It's part of a public school system paid for with your tax dollars and bully's aren't cool.

I see too many reviews here about the Gifted program! Thurgood is so much more than a great school for "Gifted". Thurgood is great school period! We are not in the gifted program. This is our last year here and I have nothing but great things to say! It is a fundamental program, so yes, the students are held accountable, that's part of what fundamental is all about! There are not a lot of clubs, no extracurricular sports, because it is a fundamental program! If you are looking for a school with lots of extracurricular activities, sports, clubs etc... this is not the school for you. If you are looking for a fundamental environment where the kids are held accountable for their classwork, homework and behavior, this IS the school for you. If you are looking for a school that doesn't require the parents to be involved, this is not the school for you! If you are looking for a school where there is tons of parent involvement, a successful and very active PTA, and involved school staff, this IS the school for you! No school is going to be perfect, but, in my opinion Thurgood is pretty darn close!
