I would give this school a negative score if it were possible. When Van Buren was re-branded as Carter G Woodson "Leadership Academy", the principal stamped it with his pretentious self-importance and has decided that any students who don't fit his 'vision' aren't worth respecting. We have 3 children currently trapped for a second year in this abysmal failure of a school, and will be seeking escape at the earliest possible time. Between the incompetence and sometimes downright hostility on the part of the administration, and the terrible waste of resources on smoke-and-mirrors "community events", there is not a single good thing I can say about our experiences with this school.

This school has had great and terrible times, yes, but until we attend here we cannot say anything that prohibits this school from being the best everyday, Our motto here is " where learning is our business". We come prepared, focused, and ready to work. I have been here for 3 years now. and seeing the growth in the students, the teachers, and people in a majority here, it blows my mind, My mentality has grown all the way from immature to dedicated. your reviews matter yes, but until u grow up here and build a relationship with kids and administrators here there is no room for comments :/ come and visit the campus, then add a comment on greatschools, org, thank you.

The teachers, principals, and staff are excellent! The current principal, Mr. Wilson, works very hard to maintain high academic standards & student moral. His voice is the main voice parents or guardians hear via phone message regarding pertinent information and/or upcoming events. My child's teachers are always available and open to any questions or concerns I may have. I am provided with the option to contact them via phone, in-person or online. They are honest and frank with regard to informing me of my child's area of academic weakness. This is my child's last year and she enjoyed the warmth, love and care from all! Go Pirates! We will miss you!!!
