Around Garden Oaks

Garden Oaks is considered a bedroom community, which means a majority of residents commute to central Houston and other surrounding suburbs. However, the neighborhood itself has many small businesses and commercial areas, which contributed to the increase of its population. This area has many subdivisions with both older and newer single-family homes. There are also condominiums near Highway 290 and West 34th Street. This area can be considered middle-class or affluent, depending on which part of the neighborhood you’re in, so prices for single-family homes can vary greatly.

There are several restaurants in the neighborhood due to the surrounding major freeways, especially north of the 610 Loop. A favorite of foodie lovers is House of Fries, which is known for their wide variety of fries and burgers. West 34th Street is also home to a lot of restaurants and a new one is always opening up due to the perpetual residential growth in the area. This stretch has Tex-Mex, Chinese, Italian, and breakfast spots.

Small subdivisions mixed with strip malls and freeways, which is essentially the Sparks Notes summary for a majority of Houston neighborhoods. You will see nice homes in clean, quiet subdivisions that were built during the 1970s and 1980s; while newer luxury homes near Oak Forest Park is the focal point for the neighborhood’s increasing reputation as an affluent community.

Don’t let the suburban environment fool you, this neighborhood has several bars, lounges, and late night restaurants. Locals enjoy grabbing drinks at neighborhood beer gardens and dive bars on West 43rd Street and Wakefield Drive.

Avid runners, dog walkers, and bicyclists alike enjoy laps around the White Oak Bayou trails. Smaller, but no less gorgeous, parks like Candlelight Park and Oak Forest Park are also popular with locals. On Hempstead Road, just west of Garden Oaks, antique shops attract collectors.
