Hough Street Elementary School

Hough is a great school! I’m not sure why the scores are so low and I really question the validity of their measurements for this school. If you look at them closely you’ll see that minority students are scoring slightly above the white majority in math and English, hardly showing any evidence of being left behind, and lower income students are testing well above state and national averages and are fairly close to their wealthier peers. I feel the school does a good job bridging these issues as much as possible. There is a lot of support for students with learning issues, I’ve experienced this firsthand with my own child, and the principal and teacher and staff have worked hard to help my child during this difficult year. The only issue I can see in these numbers is there is not evidence of great improvement leaps year to year, but it’s worth noting that students come into this school performing at a pretty high level due to the resources available in this area. The test scores reflect this, as they are all way above the state and national averages. High performing to begin with shouldn’t translate to a lower ranking. I respect what great schools is trying to do to recognize schools that have students that come into school with bigger challenges than most of the kids at this school, however that doesn’t mean that Hough school is suddenly a poor school, when last year it was excellent. I’d encourage people to look closely at these scores as they are not very straightforward. Kids at Hough do really well, and there are many opportunities for advanced learning. This school also houses the district’s extended program, or what was formerly known as the gifted learner program, and a large percentage of the students in that program are minority students. I would encourage Great Schools to re-evaluate Hough School.

Wonderful school and community. My son started this year in 3rd grade as part of their self contained program. I can’t be happier. The teachers and front desk people are amazing. The principal is very proactive and response promptly. It is a tough time during pandemic but everyone in the school make it easier. I am grateful for this school. Go Hawk!

Wonderful community of families, teachers, principal, and staff. Can't be beat! I've had kids at Hough for 8 years, and have had great experiences there.

Both of our kids have attended this school, one in the extended self-contained program and the other in regular classes. Both had the best possible school experience. The teachers go above and beyond for each student. The school is much like a family, as exhibited this year when one student had an accident. The whole school really cared and came together. We will truly miss this school when our youngest moves to middle school next year!
