Bloomington High School is rich in diversity, history, and academic excellence. Students are encouraged (at the elementary school throughout high school) to become life-long learners. The students take pride in their academics, their extra curriculars, their community and relationships with one another. With the Bloomington Area Career Center (a regional learning center) within the walls of the building students have the ability to explore future careers in videography, culinary arts, medicine, mechanics and more. In addition, the number of honors and advanced placement opportunities at Bloomington High School outpace similar schools in the area. Our advice for students considering BHS: Get involved in a club/service project/athletics/band/drama/chorus or other activity. Focus on what you can learn and the opportunities you have. If you put in the effort, you will be rewarded. As Dumbledore said to Harry Potter: "Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who need (deserve) it." It's the same at Bloomington High School. All you need to do is ask, and the outstanding students, teachers, and administrators will be right there to lead and cheer you on to success. It's a great community. Are you ready to be a Raider?

This school succeeds even with half of it's population low income. Some schools in town have a very narrow culture view in school population for income, ethnicity, religious, etc. This school has prepared my child for the real world, and going out into it and making friends with people of all color and different backgrounds. Lots of opportunities to have your student find their "school family". Music, academic clubs, sports, theater, honors, AP classes. My student took and got 5's on multiple AP tests, they went into college as a sophomore. Which now means they can double major. It is a wonderful school that I highly recommend.

Very great teachers who give me the extra support I need all the time. Strong sports and academic teams. I participated in NAQT, chess club, and various sport. I really had fun, grew strong bones with my friends, and thrilled in academic areas.

Don't just look at the number rating, you have to look much deeper. Bloomington High School has more AP courses than any other B/N school, including University High. Not only that, it has more AP courses than many top rated flagship high schools in big cities: Portland OR, Minneapolis MN, Wheaton IL,.... It is the only high school for all of Bloomington so it serves every population, but it doesn't forget about high capability students while working to provide every assistance for disadvantaged students. District 87 is a traditional student focused district. There are bad stories about Unit 5 - giving a teacher accused of abuse a glowing rating to pass him on to another district, teaching the test, hushing up violent incidents. BHS looks ugly on paper, but it's the best school in town for a well rounded young adult.
