Overall, Powell Academy was a decent place for my child's education. With that said, however, Powell Academy was riddle with problems. I spent a few time frustrated. The main problem lies partly with CPS( Chicago Public School) set up. This is a K-8. This is not efficient for the upper grade levels, nor was it departmental( multiple teachers/ classroom switching for upper grade levels) This cause and excuse a lot of muddle-cuddling at an age where student should have been introduce to independence. The next major problem was the tyrannical attitude of the principal. This school was seriously define by it's racial make-up and economic of community. This may explain why it was unnecessarily ridged . For instance, many student were suspended for not having on the right shoes, belts ( uniform school --another drawback) Finally I must say, under the circumstances of the school ,the student were well adjusted( not at all define by irrelevancies) On the surface the curriculum tried be rigorous. Powell Academy wants to be a good school but need serious improvements

Don't let this 8/10 Score fool you. This school is nothing but smoke and mirrors. Some of the students can barely read but "surprisingly" do well on district and state mandated tests. Some have complained of the administration being overbearing and rude toward parents, teachers, and students. This "academy" is run like a military, students are suspended for little things like not wearing belts . Teachers are brow beat and micro-managed over curriculum. You would think with a format like this, student learning would be shooting to the stars!.... NOT!!! It's the ideal environment for someone who is OCD with an insane attention to detail. However, if you or your child are creative in any way, this school is not for you. In my short dealings with Powell, I found it to be stifling, non-supportive, and just a flat out lie to excellence.

This is my grandaughter s (T.W.) first year in school. I think it s been the best learning experience of her young life. I wish to thank her kindergarden teacher. Mrs Brickford
