I cannot say enough good things about Canterbury! My son's teachers have all been very nurturing, communicative, and accommodating. The teachers are enthusiastic and creative in the ways they implement their curriculum, and are crafty in making learning fun. The principal genuinely listens to concerns from parents and will "go the extra mile" to ensure students' success. The school has poured their resources into obtaining iPads for classrooms at a ratio of almost 1 per child, and technology is used appropriately and often, preparing kids for life in today's times. In addition to the standard art, music, and PE classes, STEM classes are also taught weekly in the district. Above all, my child has learned more than I could've ever imagined in the last two years. He is excited to go to school each day, which was never the case before we came to Canterbury. I feel welcomed when I enter the school, and feel like my child's learning, success, and well-being are their priorities.
Stacy Graff is in her 2nd year as the principal at Canterbury and has done a great job working with staff and parents. We have only been at the school for 2 years, but have heard from many parents that it is a night and day difference since the last principal. The office staff is wonderful and the PTO provides great opportunities for students. As with any school it is hit or miss with teachers as they all have different styles. Okay teacher last year and absolutely wonderful teacher this year. I really feel like the entire staff cares about my child and his success.
Great school. My wife and I moved to Crystal Lake for the community and the great schools. This schools has great leadership and even offers a dual launguage (Spanish) program for non ESL students. What most people don't realize is when a school and school disctrict has an ESL population of sutdents it always brings the overall "scores" down. Standardized testing doesn't account for the fact that ESL kids don't understand the test in English. Any way this school offers a great cultual mix, great staff and lots of parent involvement.
This school has a wonderful feeling when you walk in the door. You realize right away that every adult there is connected and involved with the children. The administrators that took over about 5 years ago have worked hard to make sure that expectations remain high for academics as well as proper behavior. The teachers are kind and supportive. My son is not in the dual language program, but I wish we had taken advantage of it when he was in Kindergarten. I feel comfortable calling any time I have a concern or question. Mrs. Alberth, the assistant principal, is very responsive and helpful.
