Both my sons went to Rantoul Township High School. The counselors seemed only to be interested in those students who wished to attend college. If a student was not interested they received no help to steer them to other avenues of study or employment after high school.I personally met with my son's 'counselor' and saw this first hand. The school's student body is rowdy and boisterous.Students seem to come to school in the morning not to learn but to socialize and take out grudges against others.Parent-Teacher conferences were worthless because by the time we learned of our student's weakness it was too late to influence his turn around for a higher grade or to help learn what was not learned when the curriculum moved on to a different level. The graduation rate of African-American students is pitiful. Out of 199 black students 13% do not graduate high school.I was assigned to this school in an official capacity for 12 years and was at the school at least 3 times a week.Based on the current State test scores, no significant changes have been made, to date.Almost 100 pupils of the entire student body do not graduate!

I really enjoyed how many opportunities were offered to students. I believe it is up to each child to make the choices about what they are involved in and the parent's to support that decision. I know that I had many options as to extra-curriculars as far as sporting, clubs, and music/theater go. As for the academic side, I thought if as a student you respect the teacher they will respect you back. The teachers are very caring and understand as to students having things come up and having lives outside of school you just need to let them know. You are able to obtain a quality education from RTHS, you will just have to want it. While obtaining this you will also gain a better understanding of various cultures through the amount of diversity here. I know that many people think RTHS is horrible, but it really is not as bad as one might think. There are some amazing people that walk through those halls.

RTHS lacks leadership from administration. They do not hold students accountable for their actions, therefore respect for others is never learned. This is portrayed from the classroom to sports and many events. Academically, I get the impression the kids are just pushed through, just so RTHS meets standards. There is never any homework, which I guess is a good thing considering the kids are not allowed to bring their (outdated) books home.

I've been out of RTHS for 3 years now, and I still believe it is a good school. Granted, there are some behavior problems that occur and external situations that students bring in, but that is the only thing I think the school needs to work on. Other than that, the teachers are helpful, there are plenty of activities, no matter what you are into, and students have the opportunities to take college level classes and earn college credit senior year. This school is character building and I wouldn't be the hardworking, open minded college student I am today if it wasn't for this school.
