I went to four different high schools in my time as a student. I was a part of the gifted program during my freshman year of high school. The environment was toxic and when I began having physical health issues, the administration all but abandoned me. There was also a culture of stratification in the school. Students in the gifted program frequently talked about how much smarter they were and that they were more special than "regular kids." When I made the choice to switch schools for my own health, many of my peers turned to Facebook and left messages that were brought forward to the administration and there was no response. I am very happy and healthy now, and I grew a lot from the experience because it provided so much adversity, but I also know that many of my peers would not have the same support system outside of school that I was blessed with. Truly, the idea of separating students out by learning ability and telling some that they are better than others can lead to stunted personal growth and a driving need for competition and perfection that persists well beyond high school. I am successful in spite of the gifted program, not because of it.
