Truly a neighborhood school with a great vibe. A good number of kids who speak English as a second language, this is embraced and makes for a diverse experience in an area where there isn't always a lot of diversity.
My daughter recently finished her first year of Kindergarten at Lowell. I could not be more pleased with the experience that we have had thus far. Her teacher was phenomenal! She regularly communicated with parents, even sent out a newsletter on a weekly basis. She truly cared for every child in her classes (2 sessions - AM and PM) and was an excellent educator! I am also very impressed with the new administration. Mrs. Melton has made a wonderful impression and really supports her teachers as well as the parents. The PTA is another wonderful aspect of this school. The parents are so involved and want to make the experiences of the students the best they can possibly be. I am looking forward to many years here!
Our kids call this school "the prison". That really says it all. The first time we went to curriculum night, we were running late and overheard 2 first grade teachers in the hallway telling each other to "remember, all their kids are darlings!" in a very sarcastic manner and giggling to each other. And unfortunately, although we really tried to give the school a chance and not judge it by those 2 catty teachers, there ended up being a lot of faking to look/sound like the school is caring and partnering with the parents. This 2 face attitude really isn't true of many of the teachers, but it gave us a very bad taste in our mouth. The front office isn't much nicer either. The PTA is really excellent and the parents are very active and try very hard to make it a great school but I fear that their enthusiasm doesn't enable them to see that what the staff says and does are really 2 different things. This school is all about test scores and unhappy teachers.
My daughter is a kindergartener at Lowell, and I was very nervous to send my child to school. She attends Mrs. K's class, and I am amazed. She is the best teacher, loves on the kids so well and has fostered a love for learning. I would send my child to this school for her! But administration is far from friendly, the PE class taught my child inappropriate song/dance until enough parents complained and the principal was very defensive.
