I am a current student at HSE high school. Though I have great grades, I only have them because I feel I must push myself to the point of utter exhaustion. I have spent all of my life in this school district and without fail, every year brings more challenges that have effectively destroyed my mental health. The gifted program puts so much pressure on students that the people in it are developing physical ailments due to stress. Most students in the gifted program, myself included, now have a horrible fear of failure and multiple mental health issues. Most teachers are great, but especially with the homework, the pandemic has been taxing on all accounts. The authority figures do nothing to protect students from people who have bullied or hurt them and no action was taken after I reported someone 4 times. However, they do take action with petty drama. HSE is filled with racism, homophobia, and sexism to the very core and there is no effort to listen to students. I am LGBTQ and I have experienced so many horrible things from other people. You will only fit in if you are wealthy, white, and straight. Everyone is elitist and snobby and sports are the only thing that matters. The school spends a horrific amount of money on sports, specifically football, every year, but the team still somehow manages to lose almost every game. HSE attempts to seem "woke" with their staircase saying they accept everyone, but there are entire accounts dedicated to exposing homophobia and racism from teachers and students. There have been no statements released on any of it, even though the board knows about it. The two mental health professionals they have are horribly overworked and underpaid, even though we have the resources to fix that. Teachers are underpaid as well. If you want your child to be happy, DON'T go here. Fishers is the best high school in the district, even if it isn't much better.
Both my kids attended here from 1st grade through graduation. The schools should have worked harder to stay smaller, to provide a more personal experience, but if your child is an average to above average student, you will be happy with the education and the opportunities that this school will provide.
I honestly would give the school a five because there are many factors involved that I would give the school a less scoring for but I'm giving the school a five for the majority of the teachers and guidance counselors that deeply care about the students. If it wasn't for them I honestly wouldn't complete high school and I probably would have taken my own life a long time ago.
Amazing. Fully prepared me for my college career. Made college seem like a breeze
