I have had 2 kids attend Shamrock Springs, and I've been very happy with the staff & the school overall. My only complaint would be that 4th grade needs to be a bit more challenging to prepare the kids better for moving up to middle school in 5th grade.

The special needs children are simply just segregated from other students. These children are kept out of the general ed population for specials, lunch, recess, and classroom learning. Shamrock does not follow all state IEP guidelines. I have the feeling that these children are victims of some sort of "money grab" regarding funding. I was warned against this school when my child started. I now see that the basis for these complaints is correct. Unless your child is 100% perfect, take them elsewhere.

My son attended Shamrock Springs for two years. My son is autistic. The school was pitched to us when we were at another Westfield school. It was said to have a great program for children with special needs. However, my son was placed in a self-contained classroom with several other special needs students. I met with the school constantly and pushed for my son to be given more time in the general education classroom. His time in the general education classroom was increased 15 minutes in 9 months. My son if very high functioning and very intelligent. I constantly told the school that my son cannot learn the appropriate social skills he needs being placed in a room with children that all have social problems. I even paid to have ABA therapists come into the school with my son to handle my son's behavior problems so that my son could have more time in the general education classroom. The principal of the school Robb Hedges was not happy about the ABA therapists and on many occasions told me things that were simply not true. The teachers at the school that I have encountered are fearful of Principal Hedges. There were numerous meetings held behind my back when I was told that I was a valuable part of my sons IEP team. The last straw was on one day when I went to visit my son to have lunch with him and Principal Hedges told me that after the next day, the ABA therapists would no longer be allowed in the school. Again, I was told lies that my therapists were unwilling to work with the school system. I pulled my son from the school the next day. I held meetings with the principal, the head of special needs for all of Westfield Schools, and the Superintendent of Westfield Schools. Each level chose to back Principal Hedges. This is a warning to any parent of a child with special needs. Westfield schools is trying to funnel all of their special needs children to Shamrock Springs. Parents, you have the choice to refuse this and I would definitely recommend that you do. I pulled my son and placed him in private school.
