All in all, there are some good things happening at hernwood and a lot that needs improvement. As a parent of several kids who attend this school, I will be there to volunteer and do my part. Unless you have the money for private school or changing districts our kids are stuck here. To other parents : If you feel you can’t join PTA you can still contribute on your own, in your own way, during your own time. One of the best ways is by supporting your own child as best you can. Make sure your child goes to school on time and feels encouraged. Get involved with your childs feelings and stay in communication with their teacher. Bother the administration and teachers until things get done. :)

Overall, Hernwood elementary school is a great community school which fosters a positive environment for students. I am looking forward to the new principal, next school year.

This school is an absolute joke. In a botched attempt to raise failing students test scores, they also lowered the scores of the highest preforming students. Just check out the last 2 years test results on the county site. The students are out of control, their parents do nothing to control them, and the teachers are either poorly trained or just don't care. The only way this school will make a positive change is with a complete overhaul of staff and students.

The students are "out of control" in reference to their behavior. The teachers need professional development in the area of behavior management. The principal seems to have interest, however so far I've only heard empty words without action. The school says they want more parent involvement, yet show little interest in actively soliciting parent volunteers. The PTA is no voice for the parents, the PTA President (also a school employee) seems to be a mere puppet for the Principal and V. Principal, doing only to their bidding. I have given the two stars due to the fact Hernwood does have a handful of quality teachers, who still enjoy their practice. -Hernwood Parent
