My daughter is currently in the 6th grade at NWSA. We had very high hopes for NWSA and really wanted to like it. We have been surprisingly disappointed. I should start by saying that there are some good, even great, teachers. Her Math Teacher, Mr. Altamira, is truly amazing. He has been the first math teacher to ever get my daughter to like math which has been a wonderful break through. I believe the problems at the school stem from leadership (which is to be expected) and the school culture. Here are what I see as the problems:1. The school is very unorganized. I get multiple automated messages every day with long-winded messages that don't apply to my family. The teachers don't seem to work together and end up assigning homework/projects on the same dates instead of staggering them. Emails are incredibly lengthy and poorly formatted. The school uses several different websites, each for a different function with their own respective log ins that you have to create. 2. There is too strong of a focus on EOGs. I get it, schools are affected by how there students perform on these exams and so it's important to them. However, the school drills this into the students from the beginning of the school year. Instead of teaching them to love learning and being excited about school they are teaching the students to fear this exam. 3. The school asks for money all the time. I would much rather participate in one fundraiser or make a donation than constantly be approached about ways to give to the school.4. The teachers bully the students. They make students feel bad for making mistakes, they are condescending, they guilt-trip students for their parents not volunteering enough, they mock them for being "babies" and tell them that they're not in elementary school any more and no one is going to hold their hands. It's appalling. My daughter has always been good about telling me about experiences at school and this is the first time she's described teachers engaging in behavior like this. One parent I know recently removed her daughter from the school (in the middle of the school year) because of the teachers.5. The attraction to this school is primarily the arts program but students spend very little time engaged in their respective majors. We would have been better off enrolling our daughter in a community arts program than to have brought her to this school.

My child looks forward to school and was actually sad when summer break started. This was not the case with previous schools.
